Lot Size in Forex

A lot is the standard unit for forex trade sizes. Understanding lots is fundamental — it determines how much profit or loss you make per pip movement. Most retail traders use micro lots (0.01) or mini lots (0.1) to manage risk on smaller accounts.

Lot Sizes and Pip Values

| Lot Type | Units | EUR/USD Pip Value (approx) |
|----------|-------|---------------------------|
| Standard | 100,000 | $10.00 |
| Mini | 10,000 | $1.00 |
| Micro | 1,000 | $0.10 |
| Nano | 100 | $0.01 |

Example: You open 0.1 lot (mini) EUR/USD and price moves 30 pips in your favor: 30 × $1.00 = $30 profit.

Pip value formula (USD quote currency):
Pip Value = (0.0001 ÷ Exchange Rate) × Lot Size

For EUR/USD (rate 1.085):
- 1 standard lot: (0.0001 ÷ 1.085) × 100,000 ≈ $9.22/pip
- Note: USD pairs have pip values closest to the round numbers above

How to Choose Your Lot Size

The 1% risk rule: Never risk more than 1–2% of your account on one trade.

Position sizing formula:
Lot Size = (Account × Risk%) ÷ (Stop Loss in pips × Pip Value)

Example:
- Account: $1,000
- Risk: 1% = $10
- Stop loss: 20 pips
- Pip value at 0.01 lot: $0.10
- Lot size: $10 ÷ (20 × $0.10) = $10 ÷ $2 = 0.05 lots... or: $10 ÷ 20 = $0.50/pip → 0.05 lots (5 micro lots)

Common account sizes and typical lot sizes:
- $100 account: 0.01 micro lots maximum per trade
- $500 account: 0.05 lots maximum per trade
- $1,000 account: 0.1 lots maximum per trade
- $5,000 account: 0.5 lots maximum per trade

Never use standard lots on accounts under $10,000 — the risk per trade becomes unmanageable.

Lot Size Across Different Instruments

Gold (XAU/USD):
- 1 lot = 100 troy ounces
- At XAU/USD = $2,400: 1 lot = $240,000 position
- 1 pip = $1 (for XAU/USD, pip is the 0.01 price movement)
- Use 0.01 lots on a $1,000 account for gold

Crude Oil (XBR/USD, XTI/USD):
- 1 lot = 1,000 barrels
- At $80/barrel: 1 lot = $80,000 position
- Use smaller lot sizes than forex — oil moves $1–$3/day typically

EUR/USD vs Gold comparison:
- 0.01 EUR/USD = 1,000 units = $0.10/pip
- 0.01 XAU/USD = 1 ounce = $0.10/pip (XAU tick)
- Both at 0.01 lot give similar risk per pip movement

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum lot size on Exness?
Exness Standard account minimum lot size is 0.01 (micro lot). Pro accounts start at 0.01 as well. This allows traders to start with very small position sizes — 0.01 EUR/USD = $0.10 per pip.
How many lots should I trade with $100?
With $100, maximum risk 1% = $1 per trade. At 20-pip stop loss: $1 ÷ 20 = $0.05/pip = 0.005 lots. In practice, use 0.01 lots with tight 10-pip stops. Never exceed 0.01–0.02 lots on a $100 account.
Is 1 lot $100,000?
1 standard lot of EUR/USD represents 100,000 units of EUR (≈$100,000 of EUR at current prices). However, with leverage of 1:100, you only need $1,000 margin to hold it. The nominal size is $100,000, your actual capital at risk is much less.
