Vietnam Gold Market — SJC and PNJ
Vietnam is one of the world's most gold-obsessed nations per capita. Gold has deep cultural significance — stored in homes as a hedge against economic uncertainty, given as wedding gifts, and held as a primary savings vehicle across generations. Estimated private gold holdings in Vietnam run to hundreds of tonnes.
- SJC (Saigon Jewelry Company): The government-backed gold bar brand. The State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) designates SJC as the official gold bar standard for Vietnam. SJC bars are the most recognized and liquid form of investment gold in the country. However, SJC production is tightly controlled by the SBV.
- PNJ (Phu Nhuan Jewelry): Vietnam's largest publicly listed jewelry company. PNJ sells 24K investment pieces and a wide range of gold jewelry. PNJ gold trades closer to international spot than SJC bars, as it is classified as jewellery rather than investment bars.
- Doji Gold Group: Another major authorized dealer for investment gold in Vietnam, with branches in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
- Bank gold accounts: Some Vietnamese banks offer gold savings accounts that track gold prices — an alternative to physical gold storage.
SJC Premium — Why Vietnam Gold Is More Expensive
The most distinctive feature of Vietnam's gold market is the persistent SJC premium — SJC gold bars regularly trade significantly above the international spot equivalent in VND. This premium has historically ranged from 3 million to 15+ million VND per lượng (tael) above spot.
The root cause is supply restriction: the SBV controls gold bar imports and SJC bar production under Decree 24 (2012), limiting who can import, produce, and trade gold bars in Vietnam. This artificial scarcity creates structural upward price pressure on SJC bars.
In contrast, gold jewelry (nhẫn vàng) and non-SJC gold pieces trade much closer to international spot, as they are classified differently. The SBV periodically conducts gold auctions to release SJC supply and narrow the premium, though these interventions have had mixed success.
What this means for this page: The live prices shown here represent the international spot equivalent in VND. Actual SJC bar prices at authorized dealers will be higher — sometimes substantially so. Check SJC's official website or PNJ for live retail SJC prices.
Gold Weight Units in Vietnam
Vietnam uses a traditional tael system for gold measurement:
- 1 lượng (tael): 37.5 grams — the standard investment unit. Note this differs from the Hong Kong/Chinese tael (37.429g) — Vietnam's tael is slightly heavier.
- 1 chỉ: 3.75 grams (1/10 of a lượng) — used for smaller jewelry pieces and lower-value purchases.
- Troy ounce vs lượng: The international troy ounce (31.1035g) is smaller than the Vietnamese lượng (37.5g) — 1 lượng = approximately 1.206 troy ounces. This means Vietnamese gold prices per lượng appear much larger than Western oz-denominated prices.
