Best Time to Trade Forex
Forex trades 24 hours/day but not all hours are equal. Volume and volatility — the conditions that produce tradeable price moves — are concentrated in specific sessions. Knowing when each session opens, when they overlap, and which pairs are most active during each session directly affects your profitability as a trader.
The Three Major Forex Sessions
Asian Session (Tokyo):
- Open: 12:00 AM GMT / 3:00 AM UAE / 8:00 AM JST
- Close: 9:00 AM GMT
- Most active pairs: USD/JPY, AUD/USD, NZD/USD, AUD/JPY
- Characteristics: Lower volatility, range-bound. EUR/USD and GBP/USD often consolidate during Asian hours.
- Exceptions: Japanese economic data releases create JPY spikes. BOJ meetings (published time: ~midnight to 3 AM GMT) can produce enormous overnight moves.
London Session:
- Open: 8:00 AM GMT / 11:00 AM UAE / 3:00 PM WIB / 4:00 PM PHT
- Close: 5:00 PM GMT
- Most active pairs: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, EUR/GBP, EUR/CHF
- Characteristics: Highest volume session. London handles ~34% of global forex volume. Strong directional moves. Best session for EUR and GBP pairs.
New York Session:
- Open: 1:00 PM GMT / 4:00 PM UAE / 8:00 PM WIB / 9:00 PM PHT
- Close: 10:00 PM GMT
- Most active pairs: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/CAD, USD/JPY
- Characteristics: High volatility, especially during first 2 hours. US economic data released at 8:30 AM EST (1:30 PM GMT).
The London-New York Overlap — Peak Trading Hours
Overlap hours: 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM GMT
This 4-hour window is when both London and New York sessions are simultaneously active — the highest-volume, tightest-spread, most liquid period in the entire forex trading week.
What happens during overlap:
- EUR/USD spreads at their absolute tightest (0.0 pips on ECN, 0.1–0.3 pips standard)
- Largest price moves of the day occur here — often 40–80% of the daily range
- Most institutional order flow executes here
- US data releases (1:30 PM, 2:00 PM GMT) can produce 50–100+ pip moves
For active traders, the overlap is the primary trading window. If you can only trade 2–3 hours per day, the London-NY overlap (1–5 PM GMT) is the best use of that time.
Regional time conversion:
- UAE (GMT+4): 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM
- India IST (GMT+5:30): 6:30 PM – 10:30 PM
- Pakistan PKT (GMT+5): 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM
- Indonesia WIB (GMT+7): 8:00 PM – 12:00 AM
- Philippines PHT (GMT+8): 9:00 PM – 1:00 AM
- Malaysia MYT (GMT+8): 9:00 PM – 1:00 AM
When NOT to Trade
Asian session (for EUR/USD scalpers): EUR/USD moves only 20–40 pips during Asian session typically. Spreads are proportionally wider relative to the move. EUR/USD scalping during Asian hours is fighting a low-probability environment.
Friday after NY close (5 PM ET): Volume drops sharply. Spreads widen. Any positions held over the weekend carry gap risk on Monday open. Avoid opening new trades after NY close on Friday.
Sunday open (5 PM ET): The market reopens Sunday but with thin volume initially. Spreads are wide for 30–60 minutes. Gaps from Friday close are most likely to form. Avoid trading the first 30–60 minutes after Sunday open.
Major holidays: Christmas, New Year, Easter, US Thanksgiving produce thin markets with erratic price movement and wider spreads. Not productive trading conditions.
Directly before major data releases: 15–30 minutes before NFP, FOMC, CPI — spreads widen in anticipation. Risk/reward deteriorates for new positions. Either exit or hold flat until after the release.
